Spruce Creek Fly-In (7FL6) wasn’t
always the luxurious residential and commercial airpark that we
know and love today. The airfield was originally built during World
War II as a training facility for T-6’s and other similar
aircraft that were stationed in dozens of airfields from around
the area. No aircraft or personnel were ever stationed there.
After the war, it was decommissioned and turned over to the City
of Daytona Beach where for a while it was the “cool”
place to hang-out at. The locals found good use for the runways
to drag race on and was in general a hot camping spot.
During the sixties, fences and other obstructions
were erected to discourage these uses and the search began in earnest
to find a lucrative use for the land. The city began looking for
uses for the then "Samsula Airport." The State of Florida
considered locating a state university there, but decided to go
elsewhere. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University was offered the
facility for virtually nothing, but decided to move to Daytona's
municipal field where their reasoning was; if the owned their own
airport, they would have to maintain it, but at the municipal field
they would not.
Shortly thereafter in the late sixties and early seventies, a
group of men from Atlanta took interest in the huge track of land
and had a vision for a residential airpark; which primarily means
being able to provide taxiway access to residential homes and commercial
business’s from the runway. This ideal merge of logistics
would lend itself invaluable to the aviation business-related resident
whose commercial business could be “feet” away from
his home. The airport facilities would benefit the business and
the owner by providing personal and corporate air services. This
led to the design and development of Spruce Creek Fly-In.
Spruce Creek Fly-In will always hold a special
place in the hearts of the Yelvington Family as it was this same
functional layout that Spruce Creek offered which lent itself to
be the birth place of Yelvington Jet Aviation, Inc. Incorporated
in 1990, Yelvington Jet Aviation chose Spruce Creek as its first
place of business as well as its first location for a fuel farm
and full-serve, mobile fueling services primarily because Mr. Yelvington
already had a commercial hangar that he had built in the mid 1970’s.
Since its incorporation, Yelvington Jet Aviation continues to serve
the Spruce Creek aviation community with petroleum services via
self-serve or full-serve, 24/7.
